Plot
In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal's new 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me. Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.
Editor's Review
I haven't seen an animation movie since How To Train Your Dragon and I've been trying my best to avoid anymore for the year.
So you could imagine my 'joy' when I heard it was my turn to watch a movie and an animation one at that. Reluctantly, I sat in the dark cinema awaiting my torture.
It never came.
I think one of the reasons I've never truly enjoyed cartoons (yes, no matter what they call it now, it's still cartoons to me), is that I found them to be silly and the good ones like The Incredibles, Shrek, How To Train Your Dragon and the sorts have all centered around heroes.
Despicable Me, however is about Gru, an anti-hero who yearns to be a world famous criminal mind. He has afterall, the traits of a bad guy - he uses his freeze gun when there is a long line at the coffee shop so he can skip waiting like all the other losers; he's not terribly concerned about the environment as he jets about in his smoke bellowing, fuel guzzling contraption; and best of all, he's mean. And I love that about this movie.
Despicable Me isn't your typical laugh out loud fest, instead you'll find yourself sneaking a snigger or two especially when Gru is nasty. And I think that's why I like this movie. Gru is so devilishly mean, you'll just love him.
How many times have you stopped yourself from popping a kid's balloon just to see his reaction? Gru, does it without hesitation, but with pure finesse and when he did that, a part of me stood up and applauded.
But Gru isn't all that mean (too bad though) and towards the latter part of the movie you'll see a softer side of this man whose intention is to steal the moon so he'll be the most talked about villain of all time.
Helping him in his impossible mission are his minions, a professor friend and three orphan girls he uses to steal a shrinking gun from his rival, Vector.
Is Despicable Me as good as say Toy Story 3? Some would say no, but I didn't see Toy Story 3 (and I hope I will never have to), so to me Despicable Me is pretty good and worth the RM10 ticket.
It has great animation from the people at Illumination Entertainment, great 3D effects and best of all, there's Gru, a character we have in all of us - don't bother denying it, you know it's true.
