Plot
Charles Dickens' timeless tale of an old miser who must face the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Yet-to-Come, as they help bring kindness to his otherwise cold heart. The Ghosts remind him of the man he used to be, the hard truth of what the world is today, and what will happen if he does not strive to be a better man. Set around Christmas, the most joyous day of the year, Scrooge realizes the sharp contrast of his own personality. Jim Carrey plays four separate roles in this updated version of "A Christmas Carol." Carrey portrays Scrooge, as well as the three ghosts (Past, Present, and Yet-to-Come). Robert Zemeckis ("Back to the Future" trilogy) has his chance to dabble in telling a story through the windows of time, as he directs the long-awaited remake..
Editor's Review
We should all know the story of A Christmas Carol by heart now. This Charles Dickens classic has been one of the best moral stories of Christmas. The word "Scrooge" as we know it today means miserly but it was the name of Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character of A Christmas Carol who was not generous and tight-fisted with money.
Can you imagine what an impact Charles Dickens made with that character? It is almost like how the word "Google" has replaced the term "searching the Internet" now.
So many variations have come out of this classic tale, from cartoons like Duck Tales with Uncle Scrooge to, more recently, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past featuring Matthew McConaughey.
This Disney adaptation follows the children’s classic almost to the letter and you may appreciate the movie being in 3D as there are a few drawn-out chase sequences that have more impact with the glasses on.
A Christmas Carol has a message. As we know, Ebenezer Scrooge is an unhappy, stingy man who is visited by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future one night in the hope of changing his view of Christmas - and of life.
Jim Carrey is the man of the movie (just like he is most of the time in his other movies). He is a sheer force of Nature and viewers are drawn to him like flies to light because of his versatility and fine comedic skills. He is really good in A Christmas Carol, maybe because as a voice actor and performance capture subject, he plays almost every character in A Christmas Carol from the ghosts to Scrooge himself.
The animation is very close to Robert Zemeckis' earlier effort in performance capture, Polar Express and the realism incorporated into A Christmas Carol is astounding - it is almost like a book coming to life, with the animation here looking a lot better than in Polar.
This version of A Christmas Carol is a lot darker than most. In fact, it may not be suitable for children below eight because the ghosts can be pretty scary. Even adults may feel a chill go down their spine but that is to really drive home the message that we should nurture the spirit of giving and being generous.
All in all, a great Christmas film to get us in the mood - or to scare us into the mood.
